Turkey is the only secular moslem democracy in the Middle East and a staunch ally of America and the west in that region. Turkish Republic and the Turkish Culture are  not well known in America although Turkey is a big country, one of the oldest civilizations and has been an ally and a part of NATO for 50 plus years. This lack of knowledge is probably due to the small numbers of immigrants from Turkey and the small number of Americans visiting Turkey.
